In a few days from now, precisely September 14, the Capitular fathers, the representatives of the Congregation of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate around the world, will meet in Rome to attend the 36th General Chapter. This important gathering will take place, this year 2016, during the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the foundation of the Congregation.
The General Chapter is the most important organ of a religious order and it’s celebrated every 6 years. The Capitular fathers have the responsibility in laying down the policy of the Congregation, keeping her up with the changes in the world as well as in the Church. It’s an effort to answer the needs of the poor according to the Charism of the Founder, being a sign of the Spirit for all the Church. After that they will choose the Superior General and the rest of the members of the General Administration.
In order to help the Congregation fulfill its vocation the Capitular fathers has a twofold focus. They have to assess the situation of the Congregation first, and second to try to understand the urgent needs of the world in which they operate.
Under scrutiny, therefore, is the way the Oblates understand religious life and how they live such a life in their community; their missionary spirituality and how they serve the church through the missionary project of the Congregation. At the same time, they are asked to develop a right vision of the humanity they serve and the complexity of the society this humanity live. In doing so their heart will be ready to welcome the the suggestions of the Spirit which leads a deeply religious man in God’s path.
The 36th General Chapter is an important opportunity to renew the Congregation of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate and give it the spirit of the Founder in this 200th anniversary of its foundation.
